SKYLINE DRIVE

Spanning the entire length of Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive offers 75 stunning overlooks and provides an opportunity for road cyclists to soak in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Mountain bikes, road bikes and e-bikes are permitted along all of Skyline Drive and on all paved areas in Shenandoah National Park. Bicycling is additionally allowed on Rapidan Fire Road, a gravel road in the Big Meadows area, for about a mile, where a sign indicates a turnaround point.

GEORGE WASHINGTON NATIONAL FOREST

Bicycles are allowed on open forest roads, on many forest roads that are gated to prevent motor vehicle travel and on hundreds of miles of trails in the George Washington National Forest. Many are open to multiple non-motorized uses, meaning the trails are shared by hikers, horsebackers and bicyclists.

Recommended routes include the Narrowback Mountain Loop, Lookout Mountain Loop, Magic Dowell’s Loop and the Massanutten Ring, which range from intermediate/difficult to very difficult.

LURAY-HAWKSBILL GREENWAY

The Luray-Hawksbill Greenway—a 2-mile, 10-foot-wide, paved walking and biking trail that is ADA accessible—offers leisure cyclists of all ages a scenic route through the heart of downtown Luray. Situated along the winding Hawksbill Creek, the greenway features six parking areas, two modern restrooms, four drinking fountains, eight picnic tables and two dozen trail-side benches. It is steps away from Luray’s vibrant historic district, restaurants, shops, theaters and a series of colorful murals.

BLUE RIDGE HILLS & HOLLOWS

Circumnavigate Shenandoah National Park and experience the storied history and scenery of the hills and hollows of the Blue Ridge Mountains along this 300-mile circuit. The Blue Ridge Hills and Hollows gravel backpacking loop connects eight county memorials via a mixed-surface cycling route. The memorials pay homage to the families and communities that lost their homes and land due to the formation of the national park in the 1930s.

Alternate routes offer ideas for unique extensions, like combining the loop with Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park or adding exploratory sections on old gravel roads from the loop to the park boundary.
